Motion Isn’t Momentum: Why More Activity Won’t Grow Your Consulting Business This Fall
Aug 20, 2026
Have you been wondering if you missed the back-to-school window?
You’re not alone.
Every August, I hear from education consultants who are discouraged because they assume schools have already made their decisions, budgets have been spent, and opportunities have passed them by.
But that’s not what I’m seeing.
In fact, over the course of just three days, three of my clients booked school contracts and two others received requests for proposals.
The opportunities are still there.
The bigger question is this:
Are you spending your time on the things that actually create momentum in your consulting business?
Because there’s a big difference between being busy and moving your business forward.
Motion Isn’t the Same as Momentum
One of the easiest traps to fall into as an entrepreneur is believing that activity equals progress.
You’re working on your website.
Redesigning your freebie.
Creating more content.
Taking another course.
Rewriting your LinkedIn profile.
And none of those things are necessarily bad. I’ve done every one of them.
But we have to ask a more important question:
Is this activity actually creating momentum?
Because motion can keep you busy all day without moving your business any closer to your goals.
Momentum, on the other hand, usually looks much less exciting.
It looks like:
-
Following up with an administrator
-
Scheduling another conversation
-
Sending a proposal
-
Reaching back out to a previous client
-
Asking for a referral
-
Helping your current clients get incredible results
Those are the actions that create opportunities.
And most of them begin with a conversation.
You Haven’t Missed the Back-to-School Window
Every summer, I see consultants start to panic when administrators aren’t responding as quickly as they hoped.
They begin thinking:
Schools have already spent their budgets.
They already hired someone.
I waited too long.
Maybe I should just focus on next year.
But schools don’t all operate on the same timeline.
Some districts are still finalizing schedules.
Some are hiring new administrators.
Some schools are realizing the support they thought they had in place isn’t enough.
Others are finally getting clear about the professional development, coaching, or support their teachers need.
The opportunities didn’t disappear.
The season simply shifted.
And that shift can actually create new opportunities for consultants who continue building relationships.
For example, this is a great time to spend a few minutes on LinkedIn looking for administrators who have recently moved into new positions.
Maybe someone you already know became a principal.
Maybe a former contact moved into a district leadership position.
Reach out.
Congratulate them.
Reconnect.
You don’t have to immediately sell anything.
You’re simply continuing to build the relationship.
And in a relationship-driven business, those connections matter.
Don’t Let Discouragement Turn Into Drift
One of the biggest dangers this time of year isn’t that opportunities are gone.
It’s that discouragement causes you to drift.
You stop following up.
You stop reaching out.
You spend the next few months reacting to whatever happens instead of intentionally creating opportunities.
And suddenly you reach December wondering why nothing changed.
Instead, take a different approach.
Know where you’re headed.
Know what you’re building.
Know what matters most during this season of your business.
Because clarity creates momentum.
When you know your priorities, it becomes much easier to decide what deserves your time and what can wait.
If You Only Do One Thing This Week, Do This
If your business feels quiet right now, I want to give you one simple challenge.
Ask yourself:
What is ONE conversation I could have this week that could move my business forward?
Not:
What content should I create?
What freebie should I build?
What page should I update on my website?
Those things have a place.
But consulting is a relationship business, and relationships are built through conversations.
Maybe your conversation is with an administrator you’ve been meaning to follow up with.
Maybe it’s a former client.
Maybe you ask someone for a referral.
Maybe you introduce yourself to someone new.
Maybe you finally send the proposal you’ve been sitting on.
Your goal this week can be as simple as having one conversation, or at minimum, extending one invitation to a conversation.
Because one conversation can become a meeting.
That meeting can become a proposal.
That proposal can become a contract.
And that contract can become a long-term partnership.
That’s momentum.
The Contracts Aren’t Coming From More Content
Three of my clients recently booked contracts.
And none of those contracts happened because they published another LinkedIn post.
They didn’t happen because someone redesigned a website.
They didn’t happen because someone created another freebie.
They happened because those consultants had conversations.
Content can support your business.
Your website can build credibility.
Your resources can demonstrate your expertise.
But those things should support your relationship-building efforts, not replace them.
When you find yourself filling your schedule with activity, ask:
Is this helping me start, deepen, or move forward a relationship with someone who could become a client, referral partner, or advocate for my business?
If not, it may be motion rather than momentum.

You Still Have Time to Build Momentum This Fall
Just because your business feels quiet doesn’t mean you missed your opportunity.
Schools are still making decisions.
Administrators are still identifying needs.
Conversations are still turning into proposals and contracts.
The consultants who build sustainable businesses aren’t necessarily the ones who stay the busiest.
They’re the ones who stay intentional.
So before you add another task to your list this week, ask yourself:
What conversation could I start today that might move my business forward tomorrow?
Then go have it.
